.PDF files should automatically default to open with the application 'Preview'. Personally I highly recommend it over using the Adobe Reader product. If you have an OEM iMac, this program should install with your 'Installation DVD'.

A huge chunk of the fun that you’ll find on the web is the ability to download images and other files to your MacBook. If you’ve visited a site that offers files for downloading, typically you just click the Download button or the download file link, and Safari takes care of the rest. On your Mac, open the document you want to save as a PDF. Choose File Print. Click the PDF pop-up menu, then choose Save as PDF. Choose a name and location for the PDF file. Enter the information you want in the Title, Author, Subject, and Keywords fields. Later, you can search on the contents of those fields using Spotlight. When you open a PDF with multiple pages, you can view thumbnails of all the pages in the sidebar. In the Preview app on your Mac, open a PDF or image that you want to view. Do any of the following: Show thumbnails: Choose View Thumbnails or View Contact Sheet. Show a document’s table of contents (if it has one): Choose View Table of.
As my iMac is at the Apple Store (thank you Apple Care, you have paid for yourself!) getting the display replaced, here is what I recall from memory (assuming you have Preview installed, but not set as your default program to view .pdf files):
- Hold down the <Control> button and click (or right click if you have this enabled) over the .pdf document you wish to open.
- Their should be an option that allows you to 'Open with' (something like that) or choose the default application (should be pretty intuitive..)
- Open the .pdf document with your program of choice (in my case Preview).
One of the cool things about Preview, is if you have a single-sided document scanner (flatbed or with an automatic document feeder (ADF)), it is very simple to combine them into one document without having to purchase other .pdf applications.
